Bagdogra to Gangtok by road
Most visitors to Sikkim land at Bagdogra (IXB) and drive about 125 km to Gangtok. There are two road routes. Which one your driver takes depends on the state of the roads that day.
Updated 31 October 2026
The usual route: NH10 along the Teesta
The direct road leaves the plains at Sevoke, follows the Teesta river to Rangpo, where you enter Sikkim, and climbs through Singtam and Ranipool to Gangtok. The drive usually takes 4 to 5 hours.
This road runs close to the river for long stretches. During the monsoon (June to September) landslides and repair work can slow traffic or close it for a time.
The alternative: NH717A via Lava
When the Teesta road is closed, traffic is sent along NH717A, which runs about 200 km from Bagrakote through Lava, Pedong, Rhenock and Rorathang to Ranipool and Gangtok. It is a longer hill road, so expect the drive to take several hours more.
Parts of this road are also prone to landslides, and work on an all-weather alignment is under way.
Planning your drive
- Allow a full day if you land in the afternoon during the monsoon.
- On the way back, leave Gangtok 5 to 6 hours before your flight, more from June to September.
- Indian visitors need no permit to enter Sikkim at Rangpo. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit; see permits.
- The fare we quote is for the trip, not the route. If your driver has to take the longer road because of a closure, tell us at once and we will confirm any change before you continue.
- Tea and lunch stops are usually at Teesta Bazaar or Rangpo.
