Best time to visit North Sikkim
North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang, Lachen and Gurudongmar) is reached by a single mountain road from Gangtok. The weather on that road decides most trips, so the season you pick matters more here than anywhere else in Sikkim.

The short answer
The most reliable windows are April to June and October to early December. Roads are usually open, skies are clearer, and the drive from Gangtok to Lachung takes most of a day rather than longer.
Month by month
- March to May: spring. Snow lingers at higher points early in the season, and rhododendrons flower in the Yumthang valley later in spring. A popular time, so book ahead.
- June: still workable early in the month. Rain increases towards the end of June.
- July and August: monsoon. Landslides can block the road for hours or days, and permits may be stopped at short notice. We do not recommend planning a fixed-date trip in these months.
- September: rain eases through the month. Plan with a spare day.
- October and November: clear, dry and cold. Usually the best views of the high peaks.
- December to February: winter. Heavy snow can close the upper roads, especially beyond Lachung and towards Gurudongmar. Snow is likely, but road access is not guaranteed.
Things to know before you go
- A protected area permit is needed for North Sikkim. We apply for it when you book. Carry a photo ID and passport-size photographs for each traveller.
- Snow is never guaranteed in any month. Where it lies depends on that week's weather.
- Gurudongmar and the upper valleys are at very high altitude. Spend a night in Lachen or Lachung before going higher, and speak to a doctor first if anyone in your group has a heart or breathing condition.
- Roads in North Sikkim are sometimes closed for repair or after bad weather. We check which roads and permits are open the week you travel and tell you before you pay the balance.
