Meghalaya in the monsoon

Meghalaya is one of the wettest places on earth, and from June to September it shows. The waterfalls are at their fullest, but roads are slower and some trips are not worth making in these months.

What the monsoon brings

  • Waterfalls around Cherrapunji (Sohra) are at their fullest from June to August.
  • Rain and mist are frequent. Sohra averages about 11,600 mm of rain a year, much of it in these months, and views can disappear for hours.
  • Roads are slower, and landslides can close stretches for a time.

Dawki and the Umngot river

The clear water Dawki is known for is a dry-season sight, usually from October to April and at its clearest from November to February. From June to September the river is muddy and boating is usually suspended.

Dawki is about 82 to 85 km from Shillong via Pynursla, a drive of 2.5 to 3.5 hours. It is a border area, so carry a photo ID.

Roads to watch

  • Guwahati to Shillong is about 100 km and usually 2.5 to 3 hours. Heavy rain can slow the Jorabat to Byrnihat stretch.
  • Shillong to Dawki is the road most often hit by landslides in the monsoon.
  • The Nongriat trek to the double-decker root bridge is 3,000 to 3,500 steps each way. The steps are slippery in the rain; November to March is the better time.

If you travel in the monsoon

Plan Cherrapunji for the waterfalls, keep a spare day, and leave Dawki for a dry-season trip. We confirm the state of the roads before your trip starts.
