Places to visit on a Sikkim tour
Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathula
A high-altitude lake on the road east of Gangtok, with Baba Mandir and the Nathula border pass further up. A permit is needed; Nathula is open to Indian nationals only, Wednesday to Sunday.
Lachung, Yumthang Valley and Zero Point
North Sikkim's best-known circuit: a night in Lachung, then Yumthang Valley and, when the road is open, Zero Point. Needs a protected area permit and an SUV.
Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake
The second North Sikkim route, with a night in Lachen and an early start for Gurudongmar Lake. Very high altitude; acclimatise in Lachung or Lachen first.
Pelling and West Sikkim
Views of Kanchenjunga, Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse ruins and Khecheopalri Lake, about 117 km from Gangtok.
Ravangla and Namchi
South Sikkim stops between Gangtok and Pelling: Buddha Park at Ravangla, and Char Dham and the Guru Padmasambhava statue at Namchi.
How to reach Sikkim
- Bagdogra Airport (IXB)The main airport for Sikkim, about 125 km and 4 to 5 hours by road from Gangtok.
- New Jalpaiguri (NJP) stationThe main railway station, about 123 km from Gangtok, with trains from Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati.
- Pakyong AirportClose to Gangtok, but flights are limited; check the current schedule before you plan around it.

Do I need a permit for Sikkim?
Indian visitors need no permit to enter Sikkim or to visit Gangtok, Pelling, Namchi and Ravangla. Tsomgo Lake, Nathula, Zuluk and North Sikkim need a protected area permit, which we arrange with the booking. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit.
